Seeing as I am off to Glastonbury tomorrow morning, I thought I would share the cinema tent listings for the festival and a few thoughts about them. Here’s hoping that in between music, partying and chilling out there will be time enough for me to catch a couple of the screenings.
Thursday
11:00 Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
14:00 Adventureland (preview screening)
16:00 The Boat that Rocked
18:30 Yes Man
20:30 Mamma Mia!
22:30 Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
00:30 Anvil! The Story of Anvil
02:00 Spinal Tap 25th Anniversary
- of all these I am most likely to see The Boat That Rocked, which would seem appropriate for the event, being the story of pirate radio in the UK. The atmosphere for either cult classics Ferris Bueller or Spinal Tap would arguably be feel-good and fun. Also if we’re all in a happy-go-lucky sing-song mood (and unashamedly camp and silly) then Mamma Mia! would also be worth a watch.
Friday
11:00 Bolt 3D
12:30 A time comes
13:00 Future shorts presents “Adventure”
14:00 Marley and Me
16:00 Batman Begins
18:20 The Dark Knight
21:00 Moon & Sledgehammer
22:30 Vicky Cristina Barcelona
00:30 Slumdog Millionaire
02:30 Soul Power
- With the exception of the underwhelming Bolt and the mediocre Marley and Me, Friday’s listings are impressive, with the back-to-back Batman films proving very tempting (and also a great idea on the part of the festival organisers). Both the Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire and Woody Allen’s latest effort Vicky Cristina Barcelona should attract a fair few viewers, although one shouldn’t believe ridiculous amount of media hype surrounding both films.
Saturday
11:00 Coraline 3D
13:00 Monsters v Aliens 3D
15:00 Woodstock 40th Anniversary Director’s Cut
19:30 In The Loop
21:30 Moonwalk One NASA 40th
22:40 Rockanrolla
00:30 Star Trek
02:30 Grindhouse – Double bill
- highlights of the films scheduled for Saturday include the wonderful Coraline and very good Monsters v Aliens, both charming animated fare for younger festival-goers (although be warned for Coraline – see review). Armando Ianucci’s In the Loop is also tempting, being a witty biting satire of the world of Anglo-American international relations and policy that seems a neat companion piece to Moonwalk One NASA 40th. MMM’s pick of the Saturday films has to be Star Trek, one of the most enjoyable and entertaining films of 2009, delighting both trekkies and non-converts alike – MUST SEE.
Sunday
11:00 3D film (to be announced – allegedly Up, the latest from Disney-Pixar)
13:00 Doubt
15:00 The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
18:00 The Age Of Stupid
20:00 Soul Power
21:30 Future shorts presents “Best of 2009″
22:30 Waltz with Bashir
00:30 Watchmen
03:00 Let The Right One In
- Sunday’s films sees a screening of the film adaptation of what is arguably The Greatest Comicbook Of All Time, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, a very faithful (if somewhat troubled) envisioning of Alan Moore’s legendary novel. Late evening brings two films that audiences will be (I am at least) itching to see, Israeli art-house Waltz With Bashir and Swedish vampire romantic horror Let The Right One In. Of all the films on over the weekend it is this piece of Scandinavian noir that I am most looking forward to catching.
Have a great Glastonbury if you’re going, hopefully reviews of some of the above to follow next week!
M xx
